Health and Nutrition

Health

At Nah Jee Wah the safety and physical well being of our campers and staff is our number one priority.  Our Health Center is an air conditioned building equipped with a private exam room, medication room, triage room, nurses living quarters, kitchen and beds for campers to rest or stay overnight.

Medical Staff & Protocols
Our resident health staff consists of a doctor, two infirmary managers and up to five registered nurses who oversee the medical care of our campers throughout the entire summer, including those with unique situations such as allergies, chronic health issues, and those requiring regular medication. Our doctor and nurses live on campus to ensure appropriate care. Sick Call takes place twice daily, and campers are encouraged to come in for a visit when they (or their counselors) think they need medical assistance. Nurses dispense medications at breakfast, lunch, dinner, and before bed.  We are also only a short distance from an Urgent Care facility in Milford, PA and a major hospital in Port Jervis, NY (14 miles away).

Illness
If campers need to spend the night in the infirmary, we have spacious male and female dorms, accessible showers and toilets, and private dining area. The Health Center provides campers with bedding so they don’t have to worry about bringing their own if they are there for an overnight stay.  Additionally counselors are given a list of items (including any favorite stuffed animals)  to bring to campers who need to spend the night, and check in with their campers frequently throughout their stay.

Parental Communication
If a camper is staying in the Health Center overnight or receiving care for a unique situation, the health staff always informs his or her parents. We also understand that young campers away from home often need an extra dose of “tender loving care”. Our nurses and infirmary administrators understand that working in a summer camp requires them to be sensitive to the needs of children. It is essential that our nurses have both the appropriate credentials and the right temperament to work with children.

Nutrition

Each summer, the goal of our dining room is to provide nutritious and well balanced meals that children enjoy. Our campers eat cafeteria style with their bunk and counselors. Our counselors get to know their campers’ eating habits and food allergies and help them appropriately. Nah-Jee-Wah is staffed with a specialty food liaison who assists children with food allergies and other dietary needs.

Meals
During the summer, campers are constantly on the go and it’s extremely important that they eat right to maintain their health and energy. We strive to put together a kosher menu that is both diverse and nutritionally sound. Of course, we realize that not every child is going to like every meal, which is why we make sure to always have multiple options available.

At breakfast, we offer a full cereal bar, fresh fruit, bread, portion packaged Peanut-Butter & Jelly and yogurt. At lunch and dinner we offer a full salad bar, plain pasta, bread, Peanut Butter & Jelly and fresh fruit. These items complement our hot entrees which can be seen by clicking on the sample menu below.

Snacks
To complement our 3 meals, we offer two daily snacks, one mid morning and again mid afternoon. Snack consists of apple slices, cookies, granola bars, chips, and pretzels. Hydration stations are located throughout camp and we also encourage campers to bring their own water bottles to stay hydrated throughout the day.

Gluten Free
The NJY Camps has a dedicated GIG Certified Gluten Free kitchen serving meals to match those of our traditional menu. These meals are served from a separate service line with a dedicated salad bar to ensure individuals with Celiac are well taken of.

Nut Free
We are also a nut aware camp only serving peanut butter in portion packaged containers.
